The clocks on my PPC 6700 PDA smartphone and on my Dell Axim x50v did not update automatically for the early daylight savings that took place overnight. My PC's were fine. I have a hunch that my handheld devices will update in April like they would in years past. I would at least think that Sprint would have sent an update throught the cell network for the PPC 6700. My five has an LG xv8500 Chocolate (not so smart) phone, and it was updated; presumabley through the Verizon EVDO network.

Palm has a download to update Palm handhelds and Treo smartphones. Even if you reset the clock on your device manually, it might be a good idea to install the update so that your Treo won't change by an hour on the first sunday of April.

I have finished putting together the Minty Boost charger that I mentioned in the last entry. I have tested it on the following devices: PPC 6700 - Works with a thicker cable. Dell Axim x50v - Device must be off. Palm Treo 700p. T-Mobile MDA.

The kit was easy to solder together, even for a beginner like me. I have ordered more kits to give away as gifts.

There is a kit available to make a boost charger out of an Altiods gum tin. The kit requires some soldering, but is suitable for a beginner. The finished charger uses two AA batteries, and will charge any gadget that uses USB. I have ordered two kits ($19.99 each). I plan to use them on my Dell Axim x50v, my Palm Tungsten C and Tungsten T5, and my new Sprint PPC 6700 PDA phone.

The kit can be found here.

I have been beta testing NoviiRemote 4.0 for the past several days. It is awesome. I have tried it on the Axim x50v, and T-mobile MDA (a PDA phone). There are also versions for Palm handelds and Treo smartphones, as well as for Symbian smartphones.

I have set up my Viewsonic HDTV, Dishnetwork satellite receiver, DVD recorder, and am working on my Roomba robotic vacuum. If NoviiRemote does not have a codebase for your TV/DVD/etc., it will learn from your existing remote. That is what I am going to try with the Roomba. That will be the subject of my next post.

The Core Pocket Media Player (formerly BetaPlayer) is free PDA software that can handle streaming MP3's. This alone makes it worth installing. I listen my local NPR news streamed by KPCC.org. I can even plug cordless speakers into the headphone jack of the x50v or Palm Tungsten T5, and let the PDA act as a media center.
The Palm Tungsten C needs an adapter for the mono headphone jack, but the Core Pocket Media Player is a must have for a gadget that comes with no MP3 player. Another plus is that it will play AVI video files. The lack of AVI support is a shortcoming of Windows Media Player on the Pocket PC, and Realplayer Mobile on the Tungsten T5. Best of all, it's free!

Palm has a new device that is targeted toward the budget minded. The Palm T|X is similar to a Tungsten T5, but with a lower price. The features are:

312 Mhz processor

128 MB memory

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in.

320x480 resolution on a 4 inch screen

$299 suggested price.

I
like this device compared to a Tungsten T5. It has a better price, and built in Wi-Fi. Palm seems to have gotten a jump on the Window's mobile 5.0 gadgets (with the exception of their own Treo 700 smart phone and the Dell x51's).

They include:

4 GB hard drive

320 x 480 screen - It's not VGA, but it is nice.

416 mhz Intel processor

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless built in

Blazer 4.1 web browser

Documents to Go

Drive Mode Function - Use it as a mobile disk drive.

It is like a Tungsten T5 on steroids.

What is the best PDA? The Palm Tungsten T5? Well OK, only under certain conditions. The palm OS is certainly user friendly. This is especially true for a new PDA user. If you have other Bluetooth devices, this might be the PDA for you. It does not have a VGA screen, but the 320x480 resolution is nice. Flash drive? It is nice, but you can get a 512mb flash drive for under $25.00, so that is not a big selling point. Put in another $129.00 for the PalmOne wi-fi sd card, and you are going to spend close to $500. I would love to try out Blazer 4.0 on my Tungsten C. I wish it would be made available.

PDA unlock Problems?

It is like locking your keys in the car. You can't remember/do not know your password. The hint (what hint?) makes no sense. How do you unlock your PDA? A hard reset is the answer of course. You will lose any changes or software that was added after the last snyc, but that sure beats a PDA that you can't unlock. Snyc the handheld, and your system will be restored.

I had a friend ask me why his Palm Tungsten C make all of these clicking and popping sounds. He was ready to send it back. I suggested that he try changing the sound settings, and make everything "silent." He was surprised to find out it had a vibrate feature. Netchaser can be set to vibrate each time it picks up a wi-fi hotspot.
So if the clicking and popping is getting you too much attention, try "silent."
Palm Web Pro is based on the Nweb browser from Novarra, not Netfront 3.0 as was previously stated on this site.

This is a great piece of pocket pc freeware.

Realplayer Mobile is something I just downloaded for both PDAs. I must say I am much happier with the Pocket PC version than I am with the PalmOS version. The Palm software is just an mp3 player, and it only will play files from an expansion card. I wanted to be able to download streaming media on Palm Tungsten C. This is something they need to work on. At least, if you want a free PalmOS mp3 player, this will do. Remember, the Tungsten C does not come with one.

The Dell Axim will play some streaming audio. I was able to listen to the National Public Radio newscast from the web-site of my local NPR affiliate KPCC. This only worked because KPCC has the option of using the stand-alone version of the RealPlayer. I clicked on the link in a web-browser (Netfront 3.1), and it promted the download of a file called "live.ram." I opened this file in RealPlayer Mobile, and it played without a hitch using the wi-fi connection. I tried other sites but they use an imbedded version of the RealPlayer. I will work on that one.

Again this is great pocket pc freeware.

I use Netchaser on the Palm Tungsten handheld to scan for Wi-Fi Hotspots. It is a great little program. Wifi networks pop up as they come into range. To connect, you just poke at the ssid with the stylus, and Web Pro 3.0 opens. The wifi range on the Palm may be less than the Dell Axim, or HP iPAQ, but if it gets a good signal, it is easy to connect.
For web browsing, it has to be Palm Web Pro 3.0. Palm Web 2.0 came with the Palm Tungsten C. It was mediocre. Web Pro 3.0 is much better. It can be used with both a proxy or without. Sites display much more consistently with this browser.
I have read that this browser is based on Netfront 3.0. Netfront 3.1 is what my wife uses on her Dell Axim. It beats IE hands down. My only complaints about Palm Web Pro 3.0 is that it does not have the tabbed browsing feature that Netfront 3.1 has.
I have tried several other browsers. I know that the Palm Tungsten T5 comes with a browser called Blazer 4.0. I can't download it for the Tungsten C, so who knows? I have used Blazer 2.0. It was poor in comparison to even IE. For now, it's Web Pro 3.
